Bots FAQ

Here are some questions that I have been asked and that I anticipate people wanting to know in general.

One of the bots is not working as expected, what should I do?

If the bot is one with an OBS source or dock, start by refreshing the cache for the dock or overlay. Sometimes I make changes and OBS caches the old version of the page which is not compatible with the new backend version.

If the Alerts bot is not making noise, also check if you have "Manage Audio through OBS" on. If so, and you want to hear the sounds as well, turn on monitor by right-clicking the audio mixer, selecting "Advanced Properties" and turning "Audio Monitoring" to "Monitoring Enabled" for the appropriate source.

If you are still having problems, feel free to reach out to me. I keep an eye on the #bot-support channel in the official joystick.tv discord server, or you can reach me in my own server (linked above in the header), or in DM's or email.

Why do your bots want permission to whisper as me?

Most of my bots need a way to get you your config link. This link can only be included in a whisper because of how the site handles links to other domain names, and because the URL is unique to you and anyone else who sees it would be able to change your configs. Even the ones that do not currently require this may later if I add features, and so they request the permission since there is currently no way to add permissions to a bot later.

I understand that not everyone is comfortable with a bot having that permission, and if the API adds another way to send links to users, many bots will no longer need that permission.

Can I pitch you an idea for a bot or a bot feature that I have?

Absolutely! I can't guarantee that I'm willing to take on any given project, but I'll definitely hear you out. The to-do page here on my website has a list of things I'm working on, which is kept up to date via syncing to my Trello board in real time. There is a form at the bottom of that page where you can submit ideas.

Alternately, you can email me or reach out on twitter, or even stop by my stream while I'm live! (Which I am right now!)

Generally speaking, any project that I'm willing to take on, I'm willing to take on for free. There is a narrow range of projects too complex to do for free but simple enough that I won't turn them down. Also, any bot project that is exclusively for your use is more likely to be something I would charge for.

If I decide that I'd want to charge for a project, and you aren't interested in the price I quote, no problem at all! It never hurts to ask, and I will never be offended if it's not in your budget.

In the unlikely event that I do charge for bot work, all payments will need to be made through Joystick, in accordance with the site's rules.

I have a video/image/sound I want to use for an overlay or alert. How do I make it work for the bot?

Media files used for those bots must be hosted online. I am told that catbox.moe is a good place to host such files. If you are having trouble finding a place to host the files online that works for you, feel free to reach out to me and I can host them on my server.

I'm writing a bot and I need help. Can I reach out to you about it?

Absolutely. I love helping members of the community and seeing what cool projects you guys are working on! I am not available 24/7 but I will try to get back to you in a timely manner.

If it's your first time working with oauth or websockets, or REST endpoints, it can be difficult to understand, and I'm happy to help. I just ask that you have a rudimentary understanding of programming in general, and the language(s) you are using.

Do you have a ko-fi or something similar?

Nope, but if you want to show appreciation you can ti por sub on joystick :) My subscribers get extra slots for some of the bots, as a way of showing appreciation to the people who support my work.

That wort of support is never required nor expected, but it is greatly appreciated!

If I'm subscribed to you and using the extra slots on the notices/overlays/alerts bots that your subscribers get, what happens when my subscription ends?

If your subscription ends, the information in your extra slots is saved and will be there if/when you re-sub.

I like how the joystick link on your website lights up when you're online. Can I get something like that for my website?

Yup, if you reach out I can help you set it up.
